WAY TO THE 21ST CENTURY

The Institute of World History (Russia Academy of Sciences) and the Russian Society for Intellectual History are pleased to announce an international conference on theories and methods in historical discipline.

The main themes of the conference are:
1. Paradigms of the study of the past and their re-actualization
Genealogy of ‘new histories’ in the 21st c.
Contemporary historiography and global history
‘World history’ and national historical narratives
Conceptions of local and regional history
Versions of micro-history
‘New comparative history’ and ‘comparative historiography’
2. Historical epistemology after the turns of paradigm of the 20th c.
Sources, evidence, ‘traces’: why there cannot be history without criticism?
The real and/or the imaginary: limits of reliability
Historical knowledge as intercultural communication
Historical narrative: theory and practice
3. History within the system of contemporary humanities and social sciences and the problems of interdisciplinary co-operation.
Theories, methods and concepts of the past used within the framework of new multidisciplinary studies
Choice of an object, research instruments and the language of historian in a situation of crossing the borders of disciplines
Time, memory, identity: the problem of ‘appropriation of the past’
4. Translation of methodological innovations into teaching practice
Theoretical and methodological components of contemporary history courses
The problems of historical epistemology and the perspectives of modernization of a course “Methodology of history”
5. New ways to present and translate historical knowledge
The Internet as ‘historiographical space’
Computer and innovative technologies in historical research and teaching
Digitalized forms of keeping and transferring historical knowledge
Visualizing the past and historical reconstructions

Scholars will be able to continue discussion at a series of workshops:
Teaching history: the role of theoretical disciplines in a historian’s professional training
N.I. Kareev’s philosophy and methodology of history by in the context of humanities (late 19 – early 21st cc.) (to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the publication of his famous work Main problems of the philosophy of history)
Historical semantics: history of ideas and concepts. The 85th anniversary of Reinhardt Koselleck

Papers in Russian and English are invited. The abstracts are to be send to rsihconfer10@gmail.com. The deadline for abstracts is 1 May 2008.
